Excuse me while i first blow the dust off of the website. Do you ever get that feeling... the more you put something off the more difficult the thought of doing it seems ?. I don't know why but i often feel that way about updating our website. ... So not only are we...

1st Blog Post! Exciting times!

Hello and Welcome ! to the first blog post and launch of the new home of Black Hat Prints. As you may have read on our 'About' page, Black Hat Prints is a printmaking publishing house based in the city of Aberdeen, in the North East of Scotland. The works featured on...

During the down time and in between projects here at BHP i’ve been experimenting with something a little bit different and a little bit exciting.
During my time studying at Grays school of Art i was fortunate to study under a great printmaking technician named Cameron Ross.  Cameron is a great printmaker and quite experimental.  Amongst other things he makes beautiful ‘one off’ pieces using screen print and something called ‘iron oxide’.  The nuances and quality of the rust like tones in his prints were unlike anything i’d ever seen before.
Once oxidised the iron oxide creates a variety of rusted like qualities and tones.
Needless to say, ever since then i’ve always been inspired by Camerons work and as we’re soon to move away from making work featuring birds we thought we’d try our hand at a piece inspired by Cameron.

These are the first initial experiments I did using an old screen separation.  I found 3 different kinds of Iron oxide to conduct tests with. One in particular was called ‘Easy rust’ and as the name suggests rusted extremely nicely. Application of water was also tested using both spray bottles and spray diffusers for a finer listings of water.

After the initial tests and some level of comfort was found with the process a small composition was formed and the images below are taken of that composition and print.
Due to the unpredictable nature of how the iron oxidises i was able to create a small ‘varied edition’.   These prints will be made available on our website within the week.
